Revamping LHAB Showcases

Travels of the Past
As you should be aware the Longhorn Alumni Band is going to London this New Years, but in years past the Longhorn Band has traveled and preformed at many other location; Presidential Inaugurations, The Super Bowl, Rosebowl Parade and bowl game.
For one of the Alumni Band showcases at the Music Building I'm planning on covering this topic.  I'm looking for any photos, stories and information on past trips.  If you could let me (Jerry Hayes) know about these I'll be working on the case.  I'm able to scan any hard copy you might have and I'll be using a wide-format printer to reproduce in the case so you'll get your originals back.  But if you are able to send me  high-res scans that would be great too.
I've heard stories that the old "circle drills" were developed because the band did a show in a bull ring.  This might just be folklore but if true there's a story.  I also know of many tales of KKY guys driving Big Bertha to away bowl games.  I'm sure there's a story in there too.
Any help would be great.  Send electronic files to Jerry@ChampPrint.com or email me with any information.
Thanks,

Jerry.

Yvonne Powell's Fire Recovery

Yvonne Powell was one of the original women in LHB and she comes to band day every year.  She has white hair, small and thin frame, and usually carries the banner with the others.  She taught school for many years.  She has two daughters and one is deaf. Her husband passed away in Feb. of 2014.

Unfortunately on May 2, 2014 she suffered from a devastating house fire and lost everything. Her neighbors have kindly contacted  UT Public affairs, the Band Office and myself in hopes of helping her. We have validated the story and our now asking the LHAB community for support. She's living with her daughter. There is a Giving Forward Fund set up for Yvonne and the monies will be compiled and given directly to her. Click here to be directed.

We wish you all the best as you begin to rebuild after the fire,
Nefertiti, LHAB President

The Comin' on Strong Tour Update

The Comin' on Strong Tour was successful in Houston and San Antonio with the Alumni Band playing! San Antonio ended up with the largest turnout. Thank you to Tom Staton, Houston rep and Casey Magnuson, San Antonio rep for getting folks out there. UT Athletics appreciated our support and the fans loved seeing us live.

Scott Harmon gave it the old college try, but it was a challenge getting Fort Worth and Dallas volunteers at rush hour. If you live in any of these areas, email your rep to get on the listserv for events. Most of our scholarship donations come though playing events. Also, pat them on the back for their continued service as officers.

Austin Area- George Moxley
DFW- Scott Harmon
Houston- Tom Staton
San Antonio- Casey Magnuson

Nefertiti

LHB/LHAB Social Update

We had our April social event at Posse East. It was a small turnout, yet we had an opportunity to meet some delightful graduating LHB seniors. We obtained their valuable input on how to bridge the communication gap between the LHAB and LHB.  Thank you to Posse East for offering us great appetizer deals. We look forward to having more social events in 2014-2015. Watch the Blast for Save the Dates.

Percussion Repair Day is Over!

You fellow drummers owe me, John King and Linda McDavitt some cold beers! We were the only ones who showed up for Percussion Repair Day. Fortunately 3 LHAB officers also showed up to help... Nefertiti, Jaime, and Heather. Be sure and thank them!

We tossed a lot of crap leaving the following inventory:
10 harness snares
1 sling snare
5-voice tonal bass drum set
3-voice tonal bass drum set
5 quints
1 quad
1 tri-tom
4 pair cymbals
1 glockenspiel
12 extra harnesses

A few of these drums are being sent for repair because they need a new head or lug, nothing major. I'm glad it's over... I've been wanting to do that for years!

Hook 'Em,
Jeanne Yturri
