President's Report - Spring 2013

Hello to all and hope everyone is having a fantastic year so far!!! The officers with the help of the LHB Staff have been planning and discussing the ways we can make this Band Day one of the most memorable for you as we embark on this monumental event in our organization's history.

We were able to find out the date of Band Day very early, we are having a reception after our business meeting, having media and hopefully Longhorn Network cover our 50th Anniversary. Our communication with Athletics has gone very well and we look forward to this year and the future as we march forward.

As the years go by it is challenging to please every age in the Alumni Band, but we are trying our best to make this happen. At this years business meeting we will unveil a NEW logo for LHAB that I think a lot of our members will be pleased with, but like anything else we will vote on this logo at the meeting.

We are looking for this Band Day to be the BEST ATTENDED ever in our history. I want to show Athletics and The University of Texas that we are one of the strongest Alumni organizations not only in Texas but the world and we can accomplish that with your help!!! Tell your friends and family that they will not want to miss this day.

Come back and visit with our age developed friends as we celebrate a moment in history!!

Hook'em and May the Eyes of Texas Always be Upon You!!

London New Years Parade

For the spectator, London's New Year's Day Parade and Festival is a fabulous, thrilling, and an exciting event. Just imagine how much more fun and excitement you can have by participating with LHAB!

We have been graciously invited as one of the International Bands for this event. Visualize receiving the ecstatic appreciation of more than half a million people on the historic streets of Westminster - having our performance televised and broadcast by over 700 television stations around the world to an audience of nearly 220 million people. Think of the satisfaction of being part of an event that raises tens of thousands of pounds for charity each year, while we proudly continue our Texas tradition of being the Showband of the Southwest in London.

Additional information about the trip and pre-registration will soon be available online at http://www.lhab.org. Keep checking back and look for more updates to come - cheers!

Alumni Band Area Events - Austin

A big thanks to all those 50+ people that came out for the DKR Foundation Fundraiser. The event was very successful with the Foundation raising over 1 million dollars for Alzheimer's Research. I think everyone had a great time and got to see some of the football players from Darrell's era and some of us older members. Willie put on a great performance as he played for an hour and a half without stopping.

Now if we can get more people to our smaller events so I don't have to keep telling people that we can't do their event that would benefit the scholarship fund tremendously. Hopefully we don’t have to have Willie or some other celebrity or the UT Club because of the free food and drinks, at every event we are asked to play for. Our smaller events are where we receive donations for the scholarship fund which is one of our main objectives for being the group that we are.

We also just played the Brenham Maifest on Saturday, May 4th. We met at the Band Hall around 7:30am to caravan to Brenham where we are the hit of their parade. We rode on a float and got to go around downtown Brenham twice!!! It is a lot of fun and the Washington County Texas Exes take good care of us and feed us Bar-b-que, Blue Bell ice cream and BEER!!! at the park after the parade. They also give us a very generous donation every year as well. It's a lot of fun and please look forward to coming out next year to be a part of the fun.

We now have two very important upcoming toward the end of this month. Please put these on your calendar and see if you can help.

First event is Wednesday, May 29th, 7:30PM at the UT Alumni Center in the Connally Banquet room. This is a banquet honoring our own Moton Crockett given by University Masonic Lodge #1190, including the Jaycees, Lion's Club and LHAB for his many years of service to the community, the University and the many organizations he is involved in. They would like us to end their program around 8:00pm. We will play a couple of our regular tunes then have Moton come up to conduct the Eyes of Texas.

If anyone is interested in attending the whole event they are selling tickets for $100.00 each with the proceeds going to the University Masonic Lodge Foundation Fund in Moton's name for all of his contributions to the community. The fund is used to help many Masonic charities including the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, The Children's Orthopedic Hospital in Houston, the Austin Dyslexia Center and many other very worthwhile charities.

We need to get a good attendance for this event to honor Moton so please put this event on your calendar.

The second event is Thursday, May 30th. We have been invited to play at the opening social for the Lions Club State Convention to be held the Austin Airport Hilton located near the airport - same tunes we always play. This is the last official function for JP Kirksey in his year as District Governor of the Lions Clubs and he has the honor/chore of hosting the State Convention. This is a big thing for JP and we need to support him for all he does for LHAB as well. They want us to play at 7:00PM so we need to arrive by 6:30 to get ready.

Let me know if you can attend either or hopefully both of these events as they are both very worthwhile events and both Moton and JP deserve our support.

Alumni Band Area Events - Houston

The Houston Chapter of the LHAB has played two events in 2013. The first was a memorial reception for Louis M. Pearce, Jr. The reception was held at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston and attendees included members of the UT athletic department (from whom the request to play came) and people involved with the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show. As Mr. Pearce was avid in his support of both institutions, a large number of people paid their respects. The second was the annual spring fund raiser for the Houston Texas Exes.

We are scheduled to play for the 70th anniversary of the Seven Acres Jewish Geriatric Center on April 27. This event will be similar to the one in Austin in late March and will honor Darrel and Edith Royal for their founding of the DKR Foundation to find a cure for Alzheimer's. We also expect to play during the summer at Longhorn Night for the Sugar Land Skeeters, Houston area's minor league baseball team. We may even make it for the Houston Astros.

Alumni Band Area Events - Dallas

For many years, the DFW area had an active playing group. In recent years, that proud tradition has fallen off. Some of this is due to demographics... our current instrumentation on our database is woefully weak on trumpets, for example. Some is due to the inaccuracies in our records. I know we have members in the DFW area who are not on our current roster. I don't know how to entice more trumpet players to move to the Metroplex, but I believe we can rebuild our ensemble with some help from our members.

I would like to assemble a group to update our email and membership records. People respond more to folks they know, so we'll need volunteers from all decades. Having a mix of instruments would be helpful, too. I'd like to break our local database down by years in band, verify their accuracy, add missing members back on it, and try to get a core group set up so we'll have the numbers and instrumentation to play for more events.

If you can donate a couple hours to this project, I think we can rebuild here quickly. Besides, it is a good chance for you to find out whatever happened to... ! It'll be easier and more fun with more of you helping. Please email me at siharmon@aol.com if you will help so we can once again enjoy more playing opportunities. If you can't help, but want to be sure you are on the list, please send your latest info.. we can use that, too.
