Instrument and Equipment Check-out

It’s time to dust off those horns again!
We are anticipating another great turnout this year, so here is the general info on instruments:

1) Please REGISTER EARLY to reserve an instrument if you need one.  We have a very limited amount of instruments and if you wait until Friday night, we cannot guarantee the correct instrument for you.
REMINDER: we do not own any woodwind instruments to check out, so please bring your own.  Also, if you can borrow an instrument from a friend, family member, or local school, PLEASE DO!  We are looking into getting more mellos, TUBA!s, and percussion, but as always, we anticipate having a limited amount.

2) Instrument selection is on a first come, first served basis. Please show up early, because those who do will be given priority when selecting an instrument.

3) TUBA!s and Mellos: bring your own mouthpiece and valve oil.  Mellos: be aware that we own “F” Mellos, as that has been an issue in the past.  Percussion: bring your own mallets! We do not own any.

4) Instruments will be handed out at our Annual Meeting on Friday, September 18 (5:00-6:45pm at Scholz Garten). Look for the U-Haul truck!

5) If by chance you still have an instrument from last year, please contact me so I can update our inventory.

6) If you ABSOLUTELY cannot attend on Friday and you cannot have someone else pick up you instrument for you, please contact me.

7) It's your responsibility to make sure your instrument is checked in following the game. Load it back on the U-Haul or you may incur a replacement fee if it's lost.

I look forward to seeing everyone again this year!  And please, BRING YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT IF POSSIBLE!!!

If you have any questions, send an e-mail to jaime_r_luna@yahoo.com.

3. Play your chops off.

Call for Band Day Section Leaders

Band Day is coming, and we'll take the field once again to relive some of the best times of our lives.  We'll see old friends, play the old songs, and perform at half time, watching ourselves on the 'Tron while thinking, "Damn, we are still pretty good at this!"
Well, a lot of that credit will go to your skills, of course, but producing the show from scratch to finished product requires some hard work by some dedicated Alumni... our section leader volunteers. Just like in the LHB, we depend on them for on the field leadership that allows us to put a show together, ready to perform, in two hours.  We never know exactly how many Alumni will show up on Saturday, and the massed band drill is only a rough sketched, but we have to fill in the details on the field.  Without the experienced section leader corps to help teach the show, we'd never get it done.
For those regular volunteers, thank you for serving again. If you haven't stepped up before, now is the time to do your turn.  Don't worry if you haven't been a LHAB section leader before, you'll be doing just what you've done before.  I want to especially encourage our younger members to volunteer.  First, it is a great way to meet people, a great way to get involved in LHAB, and we'll need help learning the newer LHB styles of marching!
If you are interested in volunteering as a Section Leader during Band Day, you can email me directly at siharmon@aol.com or sign-up as a Section Leader on the Registration form. Thanks to each of you for volunteering again, and we’ll see you at Band Day!

Welcome from LHB Director

Dear LHAB Members,

A huge hello from the band hall to the greatest alumni band in the world!  I am honored and excited to have been named the Director of the Longhorn Band, and am looking forward to continuing our great collaborations, and strengthening the bonds between current and former band members!  We are all one big burnt orange family!

We have a wonderful lineup of performances this fall, starting with a pep band trip to South Bend, Indiana where we will support our Longhorns in the first game of the season!  The following weekend we will open our home performances with the Robinson Block/Wall-to-Wall Band and Shotgun Texas, and a little surprise for everyone at the end!

For Band Day, we look forward to a wonderful time together and a leisurely late morning start to LHAB rehearsal courtesy of an evening kickoff time!  The Longhorn Band will present a show celebrating the inauguration of President Greg Fenves, followed by the always amazing Longhorn Alumni Band!  We will then combine forces to honor President Fenves and begin his first fall semester as president in style!

Other performances this year will include: The Final Frontier, featuring music from Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Wars; LHBack to the Future, honoring the 30th anniversary of that wonderful movie (some of us remember seeing it in the theater!); Script Texas; and The Best of Austin, a tribute to the music and musicians of our town!

I am grateful for the steadfast support of our alumni, and am particularly grateful for the professional and enthusiastic manner in which the LHAB undertakes all of its activities.  We are all going to have great fun together!

Best to all of you, and please come to Band Day on September 19!

Hook ‘Em Horns, and Long Live LHB!
