LHAB Charitable Fund Report

Thanks to the efforts of our members, and the good advice of our financial management group, our Scholarship Endowment Fund has passed the $1,000,000 level!

We have come a long way from the first scholarships paid from cash donated when President Dunnegan's hat.  We still pass that hat at Band Day.  Our fund really began to grow as many of you participated in our defined donation programs,  including our named scholarship efforts. Each named scholarship was created by a donation of at least $30,000. The generosity of those donors, and the longtime support of our efforts of our members created the foundation that allowed us to build this success.

Where to now?  Long term, we would like to grow this fund so every member would get financial help.  To do that requires about $10,000,000 in the fund, so we have a ways to go. I challenge all members to remember our LHB experience, and give to our fund so that we can help new members continue to have the same experience.  Every dollar helps.  So does creative thinking.  You may have a small insurance policy as part of an association membership.  Why not make us the beneficiary?  It takes $30,000 for a named scholarship, but it can be funded by a group.  Each section could fund one if each member gave a few hundred dollars. Just a gift of $100 per year from each of our thousands of members would greatly help us.

Reaching $1,000,000 is an important and happy milestone. Thank you to all of you who have helped us make this possible.

Percussion Repair Day

Heeeeyyyy Percussionists!

You know how it works, how to beat, and even how to shake it!  Now we need your expertise to repair it. Please bring a friend or two on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 9-11 a.m. to our storage facility. We will repair what we can and you can make recommendations on what needs to head to the shop. LHAB provide bottled water and we may grab a bite to eat afterwards if you choose to attend. Please feel free to pass this announcement along.

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the deaths of two longtime LHAB colleagues.

Van Evers Kirkpatrick, 95, passed away on February 27, 2014.  Kirkpatrick entered UT and the LHB in 1936, a talented trumpet player and was charter member and first president of the UT chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.  He served in the army during WWII and had a career as a high school band director at several schools in Texas and managed Kelly Music in Corpus Christi.  His daughter, Karen, son-in-law, Max Werkenthin III, and grandson, Max Werkenthin IV are LHB alumni as well.

Wally Pryor, 86, was the longtime "Voice of the Longhorns" and of the Longhorn Band halftime shows during the Darrell Royal and continued until 2000.  In 1977, Pryor was named to the Longhorn Hall of Honor for his announcing work, his time as a 1949 All-American swimmer on the university's water polo team, his two years of participation on the conference championship swim teams, and his promotional work as an emcee at numerous university charity events.

Our condolences go to the families and friends of these men, whose contributions will be remembered for ages to come.

In Loving Memory of Van Evers Kirkpatrick

Dear LHAB,

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about Van Evers Kirkpatrick's death on Feb. 27, 2014. Mr. Kirkpatrick brought many gifts to our lives. He was a member of the Longhorn Band and a charter member and first president of the UT chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.  He was also a member of LHAB and in 2013 participated in Band Day, as one of the oldest members.

Personal memories and words of comfort may be sent to the family at on their online guestbook at www.gabrielsfuneral.com

The family will gather for a time of visitation on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 12:00PM at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH35, Georgetown. A service celebrating Van’s life will be held at 1:30PM. Graveside services will follow at 3:30PM at Live Oak Cemetery, 200 Twin Creek Road, Manacha, Texas 78652.

We are here to support you in your grieving process. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers.

With deepest sympathy,
Nefertiti Williams, LHAB President
