Introducing the Longhorn Band Legacy Fund

To ALL Longhorn Alumni Band Members and Friends:

Greetings from the Forty Acres! It was great to see nearly 600 members of the Longhorn Alumni Band on campus for the Cal game back in September. We always enjoy seeing so many friends and family members.

During the business meeting and rehearsal on Friday evening, September 18th, Bill Phillips (Trumpet ’76) announced the establishment of the Longhorn Band Legacy Fund (LHBLF), which is a permanent endowment at UT-Austin to sustain the Showband of the Southwest for future generations. Thanks to Bill’s leadership along with several members of the Longhorn Band Legacy Fund Advisory Council, our endowment effort is already off to a great start.

Why do we need to raise these funds? Sustainable and reliable long-term funding is vital to ensuring that the Longhorn Band continues to prosper and provide a world-class experience for patrons and its student-performers. To do so, we have embarked on a multi-million dollar campaign over the next two to five years to support the Longhorn Band and its activities.  Please click here for answers to many frequently asked questions regarding the LHB Legacy Fund.

Most of you are aware of the long-standing fund raising efforts of the Longhorn Alumni Band thorough the LHAB Charitable Fund. The Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund is designed exclusively to provide scholarships to Longhorn Band students only after they have participated in the band for one year. The new Longhorn Band Legacy Fund is designed to support operating budgetary needs of the Longhorn Band and to provide recruiting scholarships for incoming students. The two entities are in no way in competition, but are complimentary in providing support for individual Longhorn Band members and the Longhorn Band as the largest student organization at The University.

Please contact Whitney Kirk, wkirk@austin.utexas.edu, or Andrew West (TUBA! ’07), awest@austin.utexas.edu if you have questions. If you would like to make your gift now, you can do so by clicking here, and selecting Longhorn Band in the “sub department” category.

We will be in touch on a regular basis to update you on our progress and to encourage your participation. With your support, the future is bright for Longhorn Band.

We are grateful for your dedication to the Showband of the Southwest!

FINAL UT CLUB: Wednesday, November 25

We are up to our final UT Club pep rally for this season on Wednesday, November 25th.

We need to be there by 6:15pm so we can be ready to play at 6:30pm.

If you still don't know where the UT Club is, it is located inside the stadium and the entrance is on the East side of the Stadium.  Take the elevator to the 7th floor.  They provide us with appetizers and drinks.

There is parking available in the garage across from the stadium beside the soccer field.  If there is an attendant tell them you are going to the UT Club.  The price last year for the UT Club was $3.00.  If there is no attendant get a ticket and the UT Club has been validating them.

Please contact George Moxley (utband1@gmail.com) if you can help with this event!

Board of Trustees Fall Report

The LHAB Board of Trustees job is to manage your generous donations and give out scholarships.  In other words, "take it in, hand it out, don't lose any."

We meet quarterly at Moton Crockett's office to review our investments with Morgan Stanley and we work closely with LHB staff and LHAB officers. Our big goal this year is to streamline the scholarship application process and to find ways to showcase our wonderful student scholarship winners.

Your BOT is Kent Kostka, Donna Beth McCormick, Suzan Nyfeler, Bryan Penn, and Cathy Sorsby.

Fall Update: Letter from the President

Howdy LHAB Friends and Fellows!

It has been a quick two months since we met here in Austin for our 2015 Alumni Band Day weekend.  Your officers have been enthusiastically working on ideas and improvements for 2016, while continuing to support local activities and fostering an even greater connection with the current student members of LHB.  Dr. Hanna has reached out to us and is demonstrating his desire to help us become more personally connected to the current students in LHB.

Your officers are looking forward to a complete re-vamp of our website that will include new enhancements.  In addition, we have heard your requests for new t-shirts and other items, and are taking steps now to have some new merchandise ready before next Band Day.  We are interested in ideas for new shirts, caps, or other merchandise, so feel free to contact me with your suggestions or desires.

The Longhorn Band continues to perform creative and exciting halftime shows and represents the University with nothing but class.

Most exciting is the news that the Longhorn Band Legacy Fund (LHBLF) is now launched. You will be receiving more detailed information about the LHBLF in the near future.  I ask you to think about supporting this fund at whatever level you are able.  You will be helping the LHB to continue to be the BEST college band that it has always been and to provide future students with the same awesome experiences that we all enjoyed in our years as students in the LHB.

Your officers are very interested in your ideas.  Please contact us with any thoughts that may positively affect our already great organization.

I wish each of you a Blessed & Happy Thanksgiving,
A Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year 2016!

Cheers and Hook ‘Em!

Band Day Survey 2015

Another great LHAB weekend!!

We awarded another $48,000+ in scholarships to 43 students, performed a halftime show with LHB to honor new UT President Greg Fenves and his wife, Carmen, and had a visit from the interim AD Mike Perrin to the conclusion of our practice in the Bubble! New LHB director, Scott Hanna, and his two new assistants, Ryan Kelly and Joshua Gall, welcomed us with open arms. We look forward to collaboration with them on many occasions.

Please take about 5 minutes to respond to our short survey to help us, your officers, understand how we can improve the experience of LHAB Day and other activities throughout the year.  Follow the Survey Monkey link below to enter your responses.

Even if you were not able or chose to not attend Band Day, please respond to only two questions.

Thank you and Hook 'em!

Instrument and Equipment Check-out

It’s time to dust off those horns again!
We are anticipating another great turnout this year, so here is the general info on instruments:

1) Please REGISTER EARLY to reserve an instrument if you need one.  We have a very limited amount of instruments and if you wait until Friday night, we cannot guarantee the correct instrument for you.
REMINDER: we do not own any woodwind instruments to check out, so please bring your own.  Also, if you can borrow an instrument from a friend, family member, or local school, PLEASE DO!  We are looking into getting more mellos, TUBA!s, and percussion, but as always, we anticipate having a limited amount.

2) Instrument selection is on a first come, first served basis. Please show up early, because those who do will be given priority when selecting an instrument.

3) TUBA!s and Mellos: bring your own mouthpiece and valve oil.  Mellos: be aware that we own “F” Mellos, as that has been an issue in the past.  Percussion: bring your own mallets! We do not own any.

4) Instruments will be handed out at our Annual Meeting on Friday, September 18 (5:00-6:45pm at Scholz Garten). Look for the U-Haul truck!

5) If by chance you still have an instrument from last year, please contact me so I can update our inventory.

6) If you ABSOLUTELY cannot attend on Friday and you cannot have someone else pick up you instrument for you, please contact me.

7) It's your responsibility to make sure your instrument is checked in following the game. Load it back on the U-Haul or you may incur a replacement fee if it's lost.

I look forward to seeing everyone again this year!  And please, BRING YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT IF POSSIBLE!!!

If you have any questions, send an e-mail to jaime_r_luna@yahoo.com.
