LONDON BANDMATES
Letter from Paula Crider
Greetings LHAB:
I am tremendously excited to learn that the Longhorn Alumni Band
will take its’ inimitable spirit abroad for the first time next
December, and I shall be proud to serve as a UT faculty
liaison for the trip. I have enjoyed adjudicating the London
New Year’s Day Parade for a number of years,
and can think of no better way to visit one of the world’s
great cities than with the LHAB. It is truly a wonderful
trip, with many opportunities to enjoy other European cities
after the parade. (Paris is a quick Eurostar trip away!)
I can already imagine the excitement generated as the
sounds of LHAB bounce off the Houses of Parliament,
and draw huge crowds in Trafalgar Square.
I encourage all who are able to sign up for what could
well be the trip of a lifetime. Nefertiti Williams has already
thrown down the gauntlet: 400 marchers will exceed the
size of any band to have marched in the LNYDP!
Cheers & Hook Em!

CANCELLATION, REFUNDS, AND INSURANCE FOR LONDON
CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS
The first deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE for any reason.
All other deposits are refundable until April 15th. After that there are no
refunds but you MAY be able to transfer some of your deposit to another
traveler. Your options are to 1) receive a refund from LHAB for your
payments from February onward minus the first deposit or 2) find another
traveler(s) to transfer all of the funds you have currently paid to their
account and have them personally reimburse you (this can only be done once
enough people have signed up to cover the spots that you signed up for). LHAB is not facilitating any transaction
between you and another traveler, and in the event that you transfer funds to
or from another traveler you are fully responsible and liable for the
transaction and any charges, costs, or consequences that result from it.
CANCELLATION AND INSURANCE
After September 1, 2014, when the Passenger Manifest
(name list) is turned in, travelers who are covered by the trip cancellation
insurance that is included in the program (which includes a $40 supplemental
charge for those age 72 or older) covers you for an “unforeseen medical
emergency unrelated to a pre-existing condition”. In other words, should the traveler have a
condition that prohibits them to travel, as documented by a Doctor’s letter,
they can apply for a full refund of their deposits (less a $70/person
processing fee charged by Lloyd’s of London).
Things like illness, death of a spouse, heart attack, house fire, broken
leg etc are covered. Second heart
attack, reaction to 8th chemo treatment, a broken heart, changed your mind,
didn’t get your Passport in time, military deployment, changed jobs are
examples of things not covered.
We strongly advise everyone to read the full terms and
conditions of the insurance policy, as this is a contract between you and the
insurer. We want everyone to take the
time to be well-informed regarding their rights and responsibilities.

LHAB Charitable Fund Report
Thanks to the efforts of our members, and the good advice of our financial management group, our Scholarship Endowment Fund has passed the $1,000,000 level!
We have come a long way from the first scholarships paid from cash donated when President Dunnegan's hat. We still pass that hat at Band Day. Our fund really began to grow as many of you participated in our defined donation programs, including our named scholarship efforts. Each named scholarship was created by a donation of at least $30,000. The generosity of those donors, and the longtime support of our efforts of our members created the foundation that allowed us to build this success.
Where to now? Long term, we would like to grow this fund so every member would get financial help. To do that requires about $10,000,000 in the fund, so we have a ways to go. I challenge all members to remember our LHB experience, and give to our fund so that we can help new members continue to have the same experience. Every dollar helps. So does creative thinking. You may have a small insurance policy as part of an association membership. Why not make us the beneficiary? It takes $30,000 for a named scholarship, but it can be funded by a group. Each section could fund one if each member gave a few hundred dollars. Just a gift of $100 per year from each of our thousands of members would greatly help us.
Reaching $1,000,000 is an important and happy milestone. Thank you to all of you who have helped us make this possible.

In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the deaths of two longtime LHAB colleagues.
Van Evers Kirkpatrick, 95, passed away on February 27, 2014. Kirkpatrick entered UT and the LHB in 1936, a talented trumpet player and was charter member and first president of the UT chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. He served in the army during WWII and had a career as a high school band director at several schools in Texas and managed Kelly Music in Corpus Christi. His daughter, Karen, son-in-law, Max Werkenthin III, and grandson, Max Werkenthin IV are LHB alumni as well.
Wally Pryor, 86, was the longtime "Voice of the Longhorns" and of the Longhorn Band halftime shows during the Darrell Royal and continued until 2000. In 1977, Pryor was named to the Longhorn Hall of Honor for his announcing work, his time as a 1949 All-American swimmer on the university's water polo team, his two years of participation on the conference championship swim teams, and his promotional work as an emcee at numerous university charity events.
Our condolences go to the families and friends of these men, whose contributions will be remembered for ages to come.

Personal memories and words of comfort may be sent to the family at on their online guestbook at www.gabrielsfuneral.com
The family will gather for a time of visitation on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 12:00PM at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH35, Georgetown. A service celebrating Van’s life will be held at 1:30PM. Graveside services will follow at 3:30PM at Live Oak Cemetery, 200 Twin Creek Road, Manacha, Texas 78652.
We are here to support you in your grieving process. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers.
