Help for Mr. D Book Project
Fellow LHAB Members:
Mr. D is writing a book about his years with the Longhorn Band, to be published sometime in 2014, and he would appreciate your assistance.
If you have photographs from the “DiNino Years,” we would like to have copies for the LHB archives and for possible use in the book.
· The easiest way will be for you to scan them and email them to me. Upon receipt, I will send you a release form which must be returned before we can use your photos. My email: jdahl@austin.rr.com.
· A second way would be for you to bring them to Alumni Band Day. Please place your name on the back of each photo, and place them in a secure self-addressed, stamped envelope so that we can return the photos to you after scanning. We will have a release form available for you to sign.
· A third way (if you are not attending Alumni Band Day and do not have access to a scanner) would be to mail them to me at the following address: Joe Dahlstrom, 305 W. Brazos St., Victoria, TX 77901. I will scan your photos, return them to you, and send you a release form which must be returned before we can use your photos.
And, if you have a good band story from the “DiNino Years,” you may email your story to Timothy Sloan at timothyasloan@yahoo.com or give your story to her at Alumni Band Day. She will provide you with a release form which must be signed before we can use your story.
We will appreciate your help!

"Back in the Saddle to Fit: 10 Steps to Reclaiming Athletic Fitness for the Busy Professional"
Darryl Ewing (UT Journalism 1988, LHB Section Leader and Second Councilor) has completed a book on fitness for busy professionals titled, “Back in the Saddle to Fit: 10 Steps to Reclaiming Athletic Fitness for the Busy Professional.” Because of Darryl’s strong ties to LHB and LHAB, he will be selling and signing his book during Alumni Band Weekend and donating $5 for every book sold through LHAB as long-term fund-raiser for the LHB Scholarship Fund.
The book has a burnt orange-tinge, from its cover and interviews with UT exes Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross and marathon enthusiast Larry Macon to Darryl’s own inspiration for getting fit: a chance encounter with former Longhorn QB Peter Gardere. Darryl will be selling the book after Friday’s rehearsal and Saturday afternoon’s rehearsal. The book retails for $20.95. For those not attending Band Weekend, it also can be purchased using the PayPal link at www.bitstofit.com and entering LHAB as the promo code.
For those who are around on Thursday, Aug. 29, Darryl is doing a Happy Hour book signing for friends at Casa Chapala Downtown, 101 San Jacinto Street, beginning at 6 p.m. You can e-mail questions to him at darryl@bitstofit.com.

Message from PC, Dr. Paula Crider
Dear LHB Alumni:
It occurs to me that the Longhorn Band Director has the best “seat” in the stadium: perched atop a ladder close to the action on the field....and RIGHT IN FRONT OF the powerful sound that has always characterized the “Showband of the Southwest.” Conducting “The Eyes of Texas” in celebration of a Longhorn victory remains an incomparable thrill!
When reflecting upon my years with The Longhorn Band, I never fail to be filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be associated with the absolute best, brightest, most talented and incredibly dedicated students at The University.
What fun it will be to gather once again for Alumni Weekend; to share stories and accomplishments since graduation; to once again relive those unforgettable moments of LHB life that can only be understood by those who have been there.
Thanks for the memories. Hook Em!

All of the music that we will be playing can be found online at http://www.lhab.org/login/music.cfm. One of the pieces we will be playing for halftime will be EL Cid, so if you are not familiar with it please take a look and download from the website.
In order to speed the music check out process, volunteers are needed to help staff the check-out tables and get the music back at check-in time. Please make a note on your registration if you are willing to help.
There are TWO Music Check out times:
Friday Night
5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Music Check-Out at Scholz Garten

It’s time to dust off those horns again! Anticipating another great turnout, here is the general info on instruments. First, please make sure you REGISTER EARLY to reserve an instrument if you need one. If you wait until Friday night, we cannot guarantee you your correct instrument. Reminder: we do not have woodwinds to check out, so please bring your own. Also, if you can borrow an instrument from a friend, family member, or local school, PLEASE DO! We are looking into getting more mellos and percussion but please anticipate us being in short supply!
This year on the registration section of the website, we will have a specific number of instruments available on first come, first served basis. Instruments will be handed out between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the loading dock at Scholz Garten (look for the U-Haul truck) on Friday, August 30th. Please show up early because those who do will be given priority when selecting their instrument.
If by chance you still have an instrument from last year, please contact me so I can update our inventory. If you absolutely cannot come Friday night for checkout and you cannot have someone else pick up your instrument for you, please contact me.

Section Leaders
Wow. Fifty years! I first saw the Alumni Band in 1968, my freshman year. I think there were about 40 people marching in. They all looked old to me, but they were probably all in their late 20's, and they were having a blast! I first marched in the LHAB in 1976..I think there were about 100 or so of us on the field. Charts were pretty simple to write and teach...until about 1981. Rosie Sanchez wrote a really nice show, precisely written for about 150, only we had about 350 show up at practice. The formations wouldn't work, the music didn't fit, and we relied on the one thing that has always worked for the Band..our tradition of section leaders teaching the show. Rose, Eric Hagstette, and I scratched our a routine on the ladder, in real time, got it to the section leaders verbally, and with their help, we had a great show.
We've learned a lot since that day on how to write shows for a large band without knowing for sure how many will be there until Saturday morning. However, one thing hasn't changed, and that is our need for good section leaders. We simply can't put on a full show in 2 hours of practice without them. If you have helped before, please consider volunteering again. If you are new to LHAB and have SL experience, we welcome you. You have the experience and can do the job, and I think you'll have a great time serving. You'll be helping to make our 50th a big success while continuing our great tradition.
Please email me at siharmon@aol.com if you want to volunteer or have any questions.
And Conrad, since you are always the first to volunteer, I've already put you on the list!.

Letter from LHBSA President
Dear Longhorn Alumni
Band,
With summer coming to an
end once again, we are all eagerly anticipating the first game of the season!
Texas football, with all of its excitement and contagious spirit, quickly
approaches. With this in mind, it is my great pleasure to invite the
Longhorn Alumni Band to join LHB as Texas takes on the New Mexico State Aggies on
Saturday, August 31st.
Although it is
always a privilege to share the field with our esteemed alumni, this year is
even more special as we join together to celebrate LHAB’s 50th Reunion! This occasion marks fifty years of classic
traditions, unwavering support of the Longhorn Band, and steadfast loyalty to
our fine university. I must say that LHB is very lucky to have the
opportunity to interact with and eventually be a part of such a fine alumni
organization.
The Longhorn Band cannot
wait to commemorate this occasion with LHAB. So on behalf of all of LHB,
I would like to extend to each one of you the warmest of welcomes back to the
Forty Acres (as it most certainly will be warm).
Together may we play
Texas Fight and Beat the Hell Outta New Mexico State!
Alison Goodwin,
Longhorn Band President,
2013-2014
Letter from LHB Director
Dear LHAB
As you well know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the largest and greatest alumni band organizations on the planet – your Longhorn Alumni Band! With all my heart, I hope you will go out of your way to make it back to Austin for a weekend of celebration on August 30-31, 2013!
Alumni Band weekend is a highlight for all of us each and every year and this year even more than before! We hope for a fantastic turnout from those who graduated only a year ago to those from the earliest days of the organization. Our Halftime performance will be dedicated to the vast amount of support and spirit you – the Alumni Band – have offered over the grand, 50-year history and, of course pay tribute to all who have worked to make the organization bigger and better each year, after year, after year!
I cannot think of a better way to induct the new members of LHB then by having them witness one of the greatest Alumni Bands perform in DKR-Memorial Stadium the very first weekend of the season! What will already be an amazing day for those freshmen will be even better because of your participation!!!
Please pass the word to every LHB Alumnus you know and encourage all your old friends to come join us on the forty-acres this August 30 and 31 for a celebration of a wonderful organization - LHAB!
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU and Hook ‘em Horns!!

Letter from Mr. D
Fondest Greetings to our noble Longhorns as we look forward to gathering together for the 50th Reunion of the Worlds Champion Alumni Band!!!!!

Since then we have had growth and more growth!!! Have started a great scholarship program! Units have played for countless occasions !!! and now that Dr. Carnochan has been "in office" for some ten years we are welcoming his contingent of new faces to the "club"!

And am so very proud of this steller lineup of UT Band Directors! Jerry Junkin, Director of Bands and one of my most beloved of former DiNino LHBers! Rob Carnochan, now the "Leader of the Band" Scott Hanna, now a topflite conductor and always important leader of the LHB, Anthony Marinello, ah yes, finally another Italian name on the masthead!!!
So Blessings to you all!!!! As the years have flown by!!!! I am so pleased that I can still be "up and at em" to welcome you back to the "BAND HALL" and another rousing weekend and steller performance in Memorial Stadium!!!!
