Check-In

If you have registered online, checking-in on Friday evening will be a breeze and different this year!!

Please note that check-in will be at Scholz Garten (1607 San Jacinto Blvd  Austin, TX 78701) this year from 5:00-8:00 P.M., Friday, August 30th.

The check-in area will be set up as you enter, listed by last name. Stop by each station for name tags, instrument rentals, music, guest football tickets, spirit items and late registration. We’ll help solve any registration problems at a designated area, so if you have questions, just ask.

If you're unable to attend Friday night, anyone picking up your name tag & meal wristbands for you, will be required to sign for it and will be responsible for getting it to you.

The business meeting and playing rehearsal will last about an hour, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. At this important meeting we elect new officers and share very important information about the next day’s schedule and show- and of course, play music!
A special 50th Reunion Reception for socializing, food, and beverages will be provided for you after our rehearsal in  Saengerrunde Halle, which is right next to Scholz’s Garten!!!

Music and Music Check-Out

All of the music that we will be playing can be found online at http://www.lhab.org/login/music.cfm.  One of the pieces we will be playing for halftime will be EL Cid, so if you are not familiar with it please take a look and download from the website.

In order to speed the music check out process, volunteers are needed to help staff the check-out tables and get the music back at check-in time. Please make a note on your registration if you are willing to help.

There are TWO Music Check out times:

Friday Night

5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Music Check-Out at Scholz Garten

Playing rehearsal starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Garten (outside)-  (please bring your flip folders and lyres or a wire stand if you have one)

Saturday

Music Check-Out will be at the Rehearsal Site (The Bubble) near the Registration/Check-In table and will end promptly 15 minutes prior to marching rehearsal. After that music folders will not be available.

Music Check-Out Directions

1. Choose your appropriate music folder.
2. Play your chops off.
3. After the game, turn in your music folder in the choir room. IF YOU MUST LEAVE BEFORE THE GAME ENDS...please give your music folder to a friend. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR MUSIC IN THE STANDS AT THE STADIUM!

Instruments

It’s time to dust off those horns again! Anticipating another great turnout, here is the general info on instruments. First, please make sure you REGISTER EARLY to reserve an instrument if you need one. If you wait until Friday night, we cannot guarantee you your correct instrument. Reminder: we do not have woodwinds to check out, so please bring your own. Also, if you can borrow an instrument from a friend, family member, or local school, PLEASE DO! We are looking into getting more mellos and percussion but please anticipate us being in short supply!

This year on the registration section of the website, we will have a specific number of instruments available on first come, first served basis. Instruments will be handed out between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the loading dock at Scholz Garten (look for the U-Haul truck) on Friday, August 30th. Please show up early because those who do will be given priority when selecting their instrument.

If by chance you still have an instrument from last year, please contact me so I can update our inventory. If you absolutely cannot come Friday night for checkout and you cannot have someone else pick up your instrument for you, please contact me.

I look forward to seeing everyone again this year! And please, BRING YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT IF POSSIBLE!!! TUBA!s and mellos, if you are checking out an instrument, don't forget to bring your mouthpiece!

8/15/2013 @ 6:00 p.m.

Parking on Friday will be at the public parking garages surrounding Scholz Garten and it will be FREE.  Parking on Saturday will be in the Speedway Garage and the cost will be $15.

If you are not coming until Saturday, please pick up a coupon at registration or download one here to hand to the parking attendee at Speedway Garage entrance.

There should be ample parking around Scholz Garten and the public parking garages around 5:45 PM on Friday evening for rehearsal and check-in, but please pay attention to signs indicating time of when parking is free.

* LHB/LHAB ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR PARKING/TOWING FEES.

Game day parking is always scarce.

Again this year UT is offering us the use of the Speedway Garage located at 27th and Speedway. The parking fee is $15 for the whole day. (Parking is now $20.) They will be reserving us spaces in the garage.

As of August 8/15/2013 parking changes have occurred. Here is what should be done when entering the garage.

There will no longer be "an envelope" system. Hand the attendant at the entrance the approved parking coupon to receive the special $15 rate. Please have cash handy.

Section Leaders

Wow.  Fifty years!  I first saw the Alumni Band in 1968, my freshman year.  I think there were about 40 people marching in.  They all looked old to me, but they were probably all in their late 20's, and they were having a blast!  I first marched in the LHAB in 1976..I think there were about 100 or so of us on the field.  Charts were pretty simple to write and teach...until about 1981.  Rosie Sanchez wrote a really nice show, precisely written for about 150, only we had about 350 show up at practice.  The formations wouldn't work, the music didn't fit, and we relied on the one thing that has always worked for the Band..our tradition of section leaders teaching the show.  Rose, Eric Hagstette, and I scratched our a routine on the ladder, in real time, got it to the section leaders verbally, and with their help, we had a great show.

We've learned a lot since that day on how to write shows for a large band without knowing for sure how many will be there until Saturday morning.  However, one thing hasn't changed, and that is our need for good section leaders.  We simply can't put on a full show in 2 hours of practice without them.  If you have helped before, please consider volunteering again.  If you are new to LHAB and have SL experience, we welcome you.  You have the experience and can do the job,  and I think you'll have a great time serving.  You'll be helping to make our 50th a big success while continuing our great tradition.

Please email me at siharmon@aol.com if you want to volunteer or have any questions.
And Conrad, since you are always the first to volunteer, I've already put you on the list!.

Letter from LHBSA President

Dear Longhorn Alumni Band,

With summer coming to an end once again, we are all eagerly anticipating the first game of the season!  Texas football, with all of its excitement and contagious spirit, quickly approaches.  With this in mind, it is my great pleasure to invite the Longhorn Alumni Band to join LHB as Texas takes on the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday, August 31st.

Although it is always a privilege to share the field with our esteemed alumni, this year is even more special as we join together to celebrate LHAB’s 50th Reunion!  This occasion marks fifty years of classic traditions, unwavering support of the Longhorn Band, and steadfast loyalty to our fine university.  I must say that LHB is very lucky to have the opportunity to interact with and eventually be a part of such a fine alumni organization.

The Longhorn Band cannot wait to commemorate this occasion with LHAB.  So on behalf of all of LHB, I would like to extend to each one of you the warmest of welcomes back to the Forty Acres (as it most certainly will be warm).

Together may we play Texas Fight and Beat the Hell Outta New Mexico State!

Alison Goodwin,

Longhorn Band President, 2013-2014

Letter from LHB Director

Dear LHAB
As you well know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the largest and greatest alumni band organizations on the planet – your Longhorn Alumni Band!  With all my heart, I hope you will go out of your way to make it back to Austin for a weekend of celebration on August 30-31, 2013!
Alumni Band weekend is a highlight for all of us each and every year and this year even more than before!  We hope for a fantastic turnout from those who graduated only a year ago to those from the earliest days of the organization.  Our Halftime performance will be dedicated to the vast amount of support and spirit you – the Alumni Band – have offered over the grand, 50-year history and, of course pay tribute to all who have worked to make the organization bigger and better each year, after year, after year!
I cannot think of a better way to induct the new members of LHB then by having them witness one of the greatest Alumni Bands perform in DKR-Memorial Stadium the very first weekend of the season!   What will already be an amazing day for those freshmen will be even better because of your participation!!!
Please pass the word to every LHB Alumnus you know and encourage all your old friends to come join us on the forty-acres this August 30 and 31 for a celebration of a wonderful organization - LHAB!
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU and Hook ‘em Horns!!
