Support Big Bertha in London

Support our Sweetheart!  Our beloved bass drum, Big Bertha, is on her
first international journey accompanying the Longhorn Alumni Band as
they march through the streets of London, England at the head of the
Lord Mayor's London New Years Day Parade!  Needless to say, getting this
90+ year old treasure safely "across the pond" and back is a monumental
undertaking that could only be done first class from start to finish.

While Bertha has been in the able care of experienced Drum Wranglers
volunteering from within our own ranks, we have also hired a team of
professional shippers, contracted with an air cargo service, rented
warehouse space, and taken out a substantial insurance policy to cover
any contingency.  This part hasn't been cheap!  That's where you come
in.

Help us defray these costs now so we can devote more funds raised
in the future to providing scholarships to deserving Longhorn Band men
and women, and support the many other worthwhile endeavors of The
Showband of the Southwest.  The newly rechartered Longhorn Band
Foundation is the 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that can accept your
donation for this purpose.  A receipt will be sent to you documenting
your gift for your tax records.  Make your check payable to the Longhorn
Band Foundation with a note for Bertha's trip, and mail it today to:

We are thrilled the trip is finally upon us! In case you didn't know, Big Bertha will be arriving in London a little sooner than us. Everything is finally finalized and we are looking forward to a successful voyage. Below there are several sections of helpful information. Click each section for the entire update. I also want to thank some people whom have been helping behind the scenes to make this possible:
  • Karen Hanson and Heather Wright. They've taken on an immense number of tasks and worked endless volunteer hours. Feel free to buy them a beverage in appreciation. These two ladies are very organized and I've been fortunate to have them as officers!
  • Paula Crider has also been an instrumental part. Not only did she nominate LHAB, she's been planning the parade line-up and offered to direct rehearsals while being our UT representative.
  • Moton Crockett and JP Kirksey have completed their mission impossible, having Big Bertha fly to London and lead the parade. You two are amazing!
  • Kudos our London section leaders and others members who have volunteered their time to accomplish some daunting tasks. You all have been life savers and we are grateful for your dedication to this wonderful organization!
  • Jerry Junkin, Rob Carnochan, Scott Hanna, and Tony Marinello have offered tons of advice and support on our behalf, while working with the powers that be at UT to make this trip a reality. I'm blessed to work with such a great group directors!
It's a tremendous honor to represent the Longhorn Alumni Band, University of Texas and its outstanding programs. Thank you to everyone for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thank you & London Instrument Update

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help pack the instruments for London. I'm amazed at what a fabulous group of members we have!

Just a couple of quick reminders:

Mellos- bring a mouthpiece. Several of the LHAB mellos didn't have one in the case.
Percussion- bring an extra pair of mallets.
Color guard- per customs many rules, untreated wood wasn't allowed. Consequently, to avoid our shipment being seized because of the wooden big flag poles, we decided to pack 15 silks and poles instead.
Liquids- per customs many rules, liquids (value oil, cleaning fluid,etc..) weren't allowed in your instrument case. They were removed and will be packed in the LHAB extra carry on. Please see us in the instrument room to claim your items prior to rehearsal.

Happy Holidays,
London Officers

London Uniform Update

A gentle reminder: You must be in the approved uniform to participate in the parade.

  • London Jacket
  • White collared shirt/turtleneck
  • Solid black pants
  • Solid black socks & shoes
  • White Stetson or Santa Hat (Tubas)
  • Black Gloves (optional)
  • Rain Poncho
  • Stetson Hat Cover

It's highly suggested that you bring an umbrella and rain gear for sight-seeing. Black waterproof shoes are ideal. Water resistant, or at least water treated with silicone or Scotch Guard will be helpful
if the parade or rehearsal includes "liquid sunshine" as the Brits refer to rain. A trip to Academy or
a sporting goods store for hand warmer packs will add a degree of comfort for cold hands.
You might also invest in wool socks, long johns, warm scarf, head cover or other necessary "comfort" items. Bring an extra power converter & UK plug.

Dec. 29th @ 3:45 p.m. Section Leaders Meeting w/Paula Crider
Dec. 29th @ 4:00p.m. except certain Big Bertha crew members helping w/her unpacking

HELP GET LNYDP ON TV CAMPAIGN

Want to watch your band perform at London’s New Year’s Day Parade on your local TV station in the USA?

Well you can help make it happen!

We at the parade are telling your local stations that it is available – but experience has shown that it always helps if their viewers tell them that they want to watch it.

We are making available live coverage of all the action to your local news network affiliates free of charge. They are permitted to show it as it happens – or pre record it for later transmission.

It would be well worthwhile contacting your local stations and tell them just that – and maybe get your friends and colleagues to do the same

The technical data is outlined below – and will be posted in the media section of our website www.lnydp.com

Just get the TV station (not the viewers) to email dan@lnydp.com to register their interest and we will publicise their transmission too.

The transmission is commercial free – and broadcast with American stations in mind.

Date: 1 Jan 2015
Time:  11.15-15.45 GMT / 06.15-10.45 EST
Broadcast begins at 07.00 EST (12 NOON GMT)
No Commercial Breaks

Shipping London Instruments

The time has come to ship your instrument to London. Anyone failing to drop off their instrument will cause our entire instrument carnet to be voided and sadly, we won't have any instruments for the parade. It's imperative your instrument makes it to the storage unit.

We need volunteers to help us pack instruments and label boxes on Dec. 13th from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

E&E Motors Facility
10301 N I H 35
Austin, TX 78753

We also need some volunteers to stay and help load the truck when it arrives. Due to liability issues, the driver is NOT allowed to load our instruments for us. The pick up window time has been confirmed for 11:00 a.m. sharp!

I know we have some representatives from the tuba & percussion sections. Since we are collecting mellos, a representative is needed to help pick the best ones.

Thanks for your help,
London Officers

2014/2015 Basketball Games

Alumni!!

We are starting to put together bands for the 2014/2015 Basketball Games that occur during the Holiday season.

Alumni are invited to make themselves available for ALL games, but the MBB vs Texas State game on December 13 is our very first ALUMNI Basketball Game!  If you are ONLY available for that game, please still fill out the survey.  Mark that you are an alum, so I can give you preference for that game.

1.  Students that play these games are compensated $35 for each game played payed in cash at the event.  Games typically last about two hours from the tip.
2.  Performers are asked to be in the band seats with uniform and all equipment at the Erwin Center 45 minutes before the tip-off of each game.  This means that players should arrive one hour before tip off to change and get their music book and stand (located at Erwin Center).
3.  Uniform: JEANS, White Tshirt (Pullover Top provided at Erwin Center) - Change into uniform in Band Locker Room.  Please wear a WHITE SHIRT under your basketball top. After the game, you can put your uniform away in the locker room and directly depart.
4.  Parking passes are single-use and disposable.  Players will pick up parking passes for any/all games they are playing from the Band Office Staff during regular business hours (M-F; 8am-5pm). Parking is in Lot 70.  Link to Basketball Parking map showing Lot 70. http://www.utexas.edu/parking/basketball.html
5.  Players should enter the Erwin Center through the Red River doors and identify themselves as band members.
6.  Once rosters are set, players are expected to find a substitute on the same instrument in the event of a conflict.
7.  There is a rehearsal in the Band Hall on Tuesday, December 9.  You are REQUIRED attend this ONLY rehearsal if you are playing ANY games.
8.  The MBB vs Texas State game on Saturday, December 13 is the OFFICIAL Alumni game.  Alumni will be given first preference on this game only and there is a special rehearsal for that game on Saturday, December 13 from 12PM to 1:30PM in the Band Hall.  If you are ONLY playing this one game, you don't need to attend the rehearsal on December 9, but need to attend THIS rehearsal.
9.  Alumni are invited to ALL the games.  Current students get first preference, but we almost always have a few slots for our dedicated alumni to fill throughout the holidays.  We GREATLY appreciate your help over the holidays!
10.  If you are available for ANY of the following games, please fill out the following survey:

Available = you can play that game
Unavailable = you cannot play that game
*If you're not a UT student, create any number in the EID text box to submit your survey. *
