Letter from BOD President

Dear Alumni,

The LHAB Board of Directors met in March.  After two resignations occurring earlier in the year, the remaining Board members, President Scott Hendrix, John Brady, Joe Dahlstrom, and Ruth Dahlstrom, elected Mr. Kyle Walker, trumpet '09-'13, and Mr. Nicholas Schroeder, clarinet, '99-'04, to serve on the Board on an interim basis up to the 2015 annual meeting.

The Board also appointed Joe Dahlstrom to serve on a Special Bylaws Revision Committee and authorized the Committee to begin its work.  The Committee, chaired by LHAB member Leah Raye Mabry, a registered Texas Parliamentarian, is tasked with drafting revised bylaws that will provide a  more consistent and comprehensive governing document for our organization in the years ahead. Other Committee members include, Jo Lynn Peters, Karen Hanson, Donna Beth McCormick, Heather Wright, and Scott Hendrix (ex officio). The draft of the revised bylaws will be complete in June and posted on the LHAB website for review by the general membership.  The Board of Directors will ask for a motion to adopt the revised bylaws at the 2015 annual meeting.

Hook 'Em,
Scott Hendrix
BOD President

Letter from LHB Director

Dear LHB -

Being Director of the Longhorn Band for the past 13 years has offered me some of my most prized professional memories and all of them involve having had the privilege of interacting with the best and brightest students on our campus - you!  The Longhorn Band family, past and present, has always been made up of students and you, all of you, mean so much to me that it is impossible to put into words!  By now, I’m sure you’ve ascertained that I am about to announce my departure from UT and it is with extremely mixed emotions that I do so.

As of this summer, I will be leaving The University of Texas to take a position as Director of Wind Band Activities, Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Professor of Conducting in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami (located in Coral Gables, Florida).   I knew upon my arrival at UT back in 2002 that I would never leave this place to take another similar positions, because, in all honesty, there is nowhere else on planet Earth that I would want to do what I do here.  At Miami my focus will rest solely with the concert/musical side of the profession which, in addition to being artistically rewarding, will offer me the opportunity to be more a part of the lives of my own (biological) kids.  There is NO doubt that I will miss this place but, more importantly, I will miss you - the people who make it so great!

Now, regardless of your reaction to this news, I’m certain that all of you are very curious about what the future will bring to this prized organization that is LHB. Professor Junkin will be on hand to tell you about the upcoming search for the next Director of the Longhorn Band that will kickoff immediately and I would love to see you all there and express my thanks personally!

Thank you for all you’ve done and will continue to do for UT and LHB!

Sincerely -
Dr. Carnochan

Letter from the BOT President

Dear LHAB,

The big event with the BOT is the awarding of scholarships at the May Band Banquet.  Applications are in and the committee is working on scoring.  At the next BOT meeting we will determine how much money we have to give.

We have a change of officers for the remainder of the year.  Tadd Lanham's personal life caused him to resign as President of the BOT.  i, Donna Beth McCormick, will finish out the year as President and Scott Harmon returned to the board to finish the year.  The BOT is so specialized that it is difficult to step in mid year and absorb it all!  We have two vacancies for next year and are looking for dedicated and interested LHAB folks to step up!

Our endowment is over one million dollars, thanks to generous LHAB's friends and family who made it possible to give almost $50,000 in scholarships last year.  Please consider a donation (we are tax deductible) to the Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Trust.  We have several companies that will match your contribution.

Mail your donation to:

All the best,
